Abstract: Optimal operation of industrial wastewater treatment plants is essential for improving the water quality and stringent environmental regulations on discharged standards. This includes a strong effort in modeling activities for impact evaluation and systematic wastewater treatment management. The objective of the work presented is to demonstrate how computer-based models can be used to improve the effluent quality from industrial wastewater treatment plants by optimization of the operations. The study was carried at a mining site and the model was focused on the cyanide destruction and arsenic precipitation. For ease of use by industrial personnel, the models developed are based on Microsoft Excel. Calibration of the model was done using data collected from the site and model constants were determined from experiments. Different operational strategies for improvement of the treatment process were simulated. The calibrated model could be used as a tool for optimizing the operation of the industrial wastewater treatment plant.
