|Abstract: ||The paper traces the developments in canning technology in the developed world. The Metal Box Company has contributed significantly in the development and manufacture of canning equipment ranging from the high speed fully automatic down the simple hand-operated equipment. The appropriateness of this technology in developing countries is discussed in detail giving the example of canning of fruit juice and nectars. Current developments in packaging, such as injection moulded plastic containers and retort pouch packaging materials, are also discussed.|
